Out of the Box Festival
Brisbane, Queensland
Ongoing
The Out of the Box Festival at QPAC, Brisbane, is a biennial event dedicated to children eight years and under. It foregrounds children as creators, thinkers, and imaginative collaborators. The event, which began in 1992, is considered one of Australia’s most significant arts festivals for young audiences. The festival’s philosophy is grounded in the belief that children are experts in imaginative play and deserve high-quality artistic experiences created specifically for their developmental needs.
As part of the Out of the Box Festival, P+ERL will collaborate with QPAC to explore how children can play a more central role in decision-making, where they are placed at the very core of the festival as policymakers. An eco-creative approach to this case study will experiment with how a child-led policy process on environmental sustainability can be created, and how this might have wider influence on QPAC as a producing venue. The P+ERL team will also explore how eco-creativity can be framed through child-led artistic responses, where young people envision more positive, hopeful futures for themselves and the planet.
